First Grade Reading
In first grade we use a balanced approach in teaching literacy by emphasizing reading and writing for meaning, phonics, comprehension, and fluency through the use of shared reading, guided reading, read aloud, independent reading, and independent writing.
By the end of first grade, the district expectation is for children to be independently reading at or above a level 18. The first grade range of levels is from 4-18. Usually there is a wide range of levels in any one first grade classroom. Below is the district’s typical instructional range as divided into semesters below.
